CHANNEL 4 AND BRITISH FILM CULTURE CONFERENCE
What: This 30th anniversary conference invites media historians, policy-makers and key personnel from the British film and television industries to celebrate Channel 4′s contribution to British film culture, and to debate the future role of public service broadcasters in the film industry. Come and hear a very special concert honouring the fallen soldiers of the First World War.
Philharmonia Brittannica and Ealing Symphony Orchestra are performing Laura Rossi‚s score to accompany a screening of the groundbreaking 1916 film the Battle of the Somme. These are the final 2 concerts of the winter tour which marks the 95th anniversary of the battle.
One of the most successful British films ever made, and the source of many of the conflict‚s most iconic images, more than 20 million tickets were sold in Britain alone in the first two months of its release.
The film gave its 1916 audience an unprecedented insight into the realities of trench warfare, controversially including the depiction of dead and wounded soldiers. It shows scenes of the build-up to the infantry offensive, coverage of the first day of the battle – the bloodiest single day in Britain’s military history – and the small gains and massive costs of the attack.
The Imperial War Museum film was digitally re-mastered for the 2006 90th anniversary of the battle and performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra to a rapturous reception in London‚s Queen Elizabeth Hall, receiving a glowing review in The Times.
Both concerts include a free pre-concert talk by composer Laura Rossi and Dr Toby Haggith from the Imperial War Museum.
